Back in the day “my other life” as I call it, the restaurant business is how I earn it. It did not take too long to learn there were only three groups of people trying to steal from you: employees, customers and suppliers. As far as employees are concerned, a naive bumpkin, I think they are all honest until the “given” the opportunity to take something. In other words, put some obstacles in their way and possibly honesty will prevail. Do not make it easy! The same idea applies to protect your home if you are out of town or not. Enter a few obstacles in making the road-not that easy!

Here are some simple easy steps to take to protect your home.

1. Make sure your home always looks like someone was there and was not emptied. Leaving little things like your curtains open but do not have valuables like TV etc in front of the eye. Stop newspaper, have someone mow the lawn, stopping delivery if you go. Leave the lights on. Do not be so obvious that anyone at home.

2. Always secure your home. If you have an alarm set. Lock windows and doors-even upper level windows. Lock the garage and make sure your device is locked in a safe place and every ladder is guaranteed as well. Many houses have been broken into with tools and ladders from the garage.

3. Leave your neighbors and police know if you’re away. Value of environmental watch groups is enormous. Ask them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Your neighbors will appreciate if you reply to them. If police have knowledge of your absence does not mean they will patrol, but at least they are aware. With just a little effort and some advance planning you can take three simple steps to make your home more secure so that when you return from extended vacation or a trip to all the shops will still be there.
